It also can affect the heart or abdomen in more uncommon cases. Approximately in one year in the United States there are 2,000 to 3,000 cases diagnosed. Mesothelioma makes up about 3 percent of all cancer disagnoses in a year. Men are approximately 4 times more likely to get it than women. It is particulary hard for doctors to diagnose because the symptoms mimic so many other illnesses. Benign Mesothelioma is the only non terminal type of mesothelioma. There is no cure but some treatments have helped with prognosis such as radiation and chemotherapy.

If not diagnosed immediately, the cancers becomes aggressive and leads to death rapidly, usually within several months to two years. It is truly unfortunate that inhaling asbestos particles decades ago can cause problems today.

Asbestos is made from six types of fibers that can get into the air and water. It is mainly used in roofing shingles, floor tiles, and brake pads for your car and gaskets. Wraps made of asbestos were used during the years for insulating heating ducts and water pipes. It has proven to be deadly over the years when you are exposed to it. It takes a small amount of asbestos exposure to cause mesothelioma.

People that help mine materials that make asbestos are at a high risk for contracting mesothelioma. People that live in communities near where they manufacture asbestos or work with asbestos installation are also at a higher risk of contracting this cancer and other health problems as listed above.

There is also second hand exposure which people can get from living with or being around people that work with asbestos which can bring spread the fibers that are on clothing. If you suffer from any lung conditions caused by asbestos it is called Asbestosis. If you are overexposed to asbestos you can get Mesothelioma which is a more serious cancer that damages the membranes of vital organs such as the lungs and heart.
Many public buildings including schools along with homes have had asbestos removed from their premises. Asbestos removal is also known as asbestos abatement. The work is performed under the strictest guidelines to ensure safety of the people working as well as the public. These rules help insure that all of the hazardous materials do not fly into the air. While these people are working they are wearing protective clothing and masks on their faces to help protect themselves.

Due to strict safety codes, many older buildings have been demolished in order to completely remove any traces of asbestos. Similarly, old industrial plants and factories have experienced major renovations and changes to get rid of asbestos. Older residential homes and apartments are still at risk of having asbestos, and it is important for various structures to be checked, such as the insulation and electrical wiring. Although the harmful asbestos fibers are contained within such household structures, they can be released if there is any wear and tear on the mentioned examples.
